Game Predictions & Player Projections - PIT vs. PHI

David Dorey, @DMDorey

Prediction: PIT 20, PHI 17 (Line: PIT by 4)

The battle of the unbeatens. The Steelers have won their games despite not having Le'veon Bell or Martavis Bryant. The Eagles have won despite using a rookie quarterback in charge of a team that was stripped down by Chip Kelly. This is where Carson Wentz finally looks like a rookie. Maybe.

PIT @ PHI Rush Catch Pass
QB Ben Roethlisberger 260,1
WR Antonio Brown 6-100,1
WR Eli Rogers 4-50
TE Jesse James 3-30
TE Vance McDonald 2-20,1
PK Chris Boswell 2 FG 2 XP

Pregame Notes: The Steelers are playing great defense - they've long been tough to run on but now even the secondary has only allowed one passing touchdown. The Steelers are already looking like a contender in the AFC North and maybe just the AFC period since Le'veon Bell is back in a week. The offense is hitting on all cylinders and once again the DeAngelo Williams owners are going to sorely miss those 130+ yards every week.

QUARTERBACK : Ben Roethlisberger doesn't appear to miss Martavis Bryant much. He's passed for three scores in each game and already scored using five different receivers. He's thrown three interceptions which is high but only been sacked twice - very low compared to the past.

RUNNING BACK : DeAngelo Williams yet again turned in a great performance when he ran for 94 yards and then added 38 yards and a score on four receptions. That was against the formidable Bengals defense too so playing in Philly shouldn't be an issue this week. Williams has rushed at least 26 times per week.

WIDE RECEIVER : Antonio Brown was shut down by the Bengals - only four receptions for 39 yards after scoring twice with 126 yards in the opener. Eli Rogers opened with a nice 59 yard, one touchdown Week 1 but then only caught one pass last week. Sammie Coates finally caught a deep pass and registered 97 yards on only two receptions. Brown remains the star but is not above the odd bad game.

TIGHT END : Jesse James isn't catching more than three passes for marginal yards but he scored last week. So did Xavier Grimble in his first action ever. James remains the only reliable element here.

MATCH TO THE DEFENSE: This is tough to call since it is a road game and the Eagles have played great defense. But it was against the Browns and then the Bears. It would have been a surprise if they allowed them to have a good game. The Eagles have given up a rushing score each week though only marginal yardage. But the two offenses that they have faced are not nearly as good as the Steelers. This week is a better test of just how good the Eagles are.

Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and DeAngelo Williams always start and should have at least moderate games here. Jesse James looks like a bigger risk than usual since they have only allowed 33 yards total to tight ends and no scores. Eli Rogers could come back into play but the risk is too high for another flop.

PHI vs PIT Rush Catch Pass
QB Carson Wentz 250,1
RB Jay Ajayi 40 4-20
RB Darren Sproles 20 3-20
WR Nelson Agholor 4-60
WR Alshon Jeffery 4-60
WR Jordan Matthews 6-90,1
WR Golden Tate 4-50
WR Mike Wallace 6-80,1

Pregame Notes: The Eagles are 2-0 thanks to a very balanced effort, an over-achiever at quarterback and the fact they played teams that are 0-2. Carson Wentz makes it look like the Rams scouting department needs some retooling. Aside from Jordan Mathews, no player has turned in a big game but the defense has done a great job and Wentz has yet to turn the ball over. There is a bye waiting next week and then four of the next five weeks will be on the road. There's many more challenges ahead but Wentz has already exceeded all expectations.

QUARTERBACK : Carson Wentz threw for 278 yards and two scores in the opener against the visiting Browns but settled down to just 190 yards and one score versus the Bears on Monday night. He's been cool in the pocket and relatively mistake free so far. Even better is that he's not limited himself to just backs and tight ends but has connected best with his wide receivers.

RUNNING BACK : Ryan Mathews already has three touchdowns on the season though he only had 32 rushing yards on nine carries in Chicago. None of the backs are catching passes much and Darren Sproles has lost all fantasy value with just two receptions per week and marginal rushing yardage. Mathews would be nearly as bad but scored in each game.

WIDE RECEIVER : Jordan Matthews had a big season opener but then settled for 71 yards on six catches in Chicago. He's been much more productive than any other wideout and Nelson Agholor has been around four catches for 50 yards for the first two weeks. He scored in the home game versus the Browns as did Matthews. No other wideout had more than 18 yards in any game.

TIGHT END : Zach Ertz remains out but Trey Burton was plugged in and turned in a very Ertz-like five catches for 49 yards and one score. He's not worth a pick-up but at least he is contributing.

MATCH TO THE DEFENSE: The Steelers allowed at least 325 passing yards to both opponents but only one touchdown between the two. And that passing score went to Giovani Bernard who had a big game but the Eagles have not used backs as receivers much at all. And no back has gained more than 24 rushing yards on the Steelers so this looks at least like a down game for Ryan Mathews that could be a disaster. Even worse for Darren Sproles.

Jordan Matthews is the lone recommended start here. Nelson Agholor is a WR4 sort of receiver this week and trash time could pump up yardage and catches if it happens. But this is a better offense and defense than anything the Eagles have faced so far.
