Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is the 'safest bet at the position, in free agency or the draft,' according to an NFL executive.

Huddle Up: Several teams are likely to make a run at Cousins this offseason. He has thrown at least 25 touchdowns and topped 4,000 yards in each of the last three seasons and should be able to provide QB1 numbers no matter where he ends up.

  • Posted: 2/4/2018 6:40pm ET

The Cleveland Browns are not likely to be serious contenders to sign Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Cabot believes the Browns are more likely to select a quarterback with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and pursue a lower-tier quarterback in free agency.

Huddle Up: Even if Cleveland isn't in the running, Cousins will have no shortage of suitors this offseason. Expect him to be a QB1 candidate regardless of how free agency shakes out.

  • Posted: 2/4/2018 6:11pm ET

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins has the Minnesota Vikings 'number one with a bullet' on the list of teams he'd like to play for in 2018, according to Paul Allen of KFAN Minneapolis.

Huddle Up: Cousins has said he wants to go to a team capable of winning right away, and the Vikings fit that mold. With all three of Minnesota's current quarterbacks heading to free agency, the Vikings could be in the market. Wherever Cousins lands, he should be able to provide low-end QB1 production.

  • Posted: 2/4/2018 6:41am ET

The Washington Redskins are considering placing the franchise tag on QB Kirk Cousins in order to trade him and recover some of the compensation they sent to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for QB Alex Smith, according to multiple sources.

Huddle Up: Without the tag being applied to Cousins, the Redskins would receive no compensation and he would be eligible to sign anywhere as a true unrestricted free agent when the new football year begins March 14. Regardless of where he winds up next season, Cousins should be viewed as a low-end QB1 in all fantasy formats.

  • Posted: 2/2/2018 8:50pm ET

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he would 'love' if the Denver Broncos showed interest in signing him this offseason.

Huddle Up: Denver has some solid weapons in the passing game, and Cousins should have no problem delivering QB1 value if ends up a Bronco.

  • Posted: 2/2/2018 11:38am ET

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he was surprised when he heard about the Redskins' agreement to acquire Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith.

Huddle Up: Smith will be the Redskins starting quarterback for the next several seasons and probably should be considered a high-end No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues. Cousins should receive a lucrative contract from a team this offseason and can be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback depending on the team.

  • Posted: 2/2/2018 11:20am ET

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he is looking forward to hitting the free-agent market because he has not been able to choose the team he plays for since college. He said he will be looking to sign with a team that can win a championship.

Huddle Up: Cousins should have several interested teams during free agency and likely will receive a lucrative contract. He has posted good numbers over the last several seasons and can be considered a No. 1 fantasy quarterback next season depending on his new team.

  • Posted: 2/1/2018 6:19am ET

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is unlikely to be pursued by the Buffalo Bills, in the opinion of beat writer Mark Gaughan.

Huddle Up: Cousins will have many suitors if he hits the open market as expected. In the best-case scenario, he's an upper-tier QB1, and he could slot no further than the tail end of the midrange QB1 territory.

  • Posted: 1/31/2018 8:36pm ET

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins has drawn the attention of 'quarterback-needy teams,' with the New York Jets 'expected' to be one of his suitors, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com.

Huddle Up: This is a no-brainer, as the Jets have been seeking a franchise quarterback for what seems like an eternity, and clearly, their young options in place at the moment have no chance of leading a winning football team. If Cousins were to come to NY, he'd have some quality weapons in Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse, which would certainly allow him to continue having a QB1 ceiling.

  • Posted: 1/30/2018 12:03pm ET

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins won't be solely focused on how much money he can make this offseason. He wants to be on a team that will contend for the Super Bowl. 'Is money a part of it? Sure. Is it the only thing? No,' Cousins said. 'It is about winning, and that's what I want more than anything, so I'm going to be willing to make sacrifices or do what has to be done to make sure I'm in the best possible position to win, and that's what the focus is going to be.'

Huddle Up: Cousins will be the most coveted quarterback on the free-agent market and is headed for a big payday. He performed well in 2017 even without a reliable supporting cast. Cousins has been a solid QB1 the last three seasons and should remain a QB1 candidate no matter where he plays.

  • Posted: 1/20/2018 8:44pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins isn't a 'special' player, according to former general manager Scot McCloughan. 'You just need to have some talent around him because you don't want him to be throwing the ball 35 to 40 times to win the game,' McCloughan said.

Huddle Up: Despite the critique, every team in need of a quarterback will likely be interested in Cousins this offseason. He will likely be a low-end QB1 candidate wherever he ends up.

  • Posted: 1/8/2018 10:35am ET

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said he prefers that impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins signs a long-term deal or the team moves onto another quarterback. 'I think something has to be done,' Gruden said. 'I personally don't want to go through another one-year deal, and just [keep going] one year, one year. I think you want to have a quarterback in here that's going to be here. And hopefully that is Kirk, and if not, we have to move on and do what we have to do as an organization.'

Huddle Up: Cousins has received the franchise tag for each of the last two seasons and could receive it again if the two sides are not able to agree on a new deal. Cousins can be a No. 1 fantasy quarterback if he returns to the Redskins next season.

  • Posted: 1/5/2018 2:43pm ET

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he would sign the one-year tender offer if he receives the franchise tag again this offseason.

Huddle Up: Cousins has received the franchise tag in each of the last two offseasons, so it will be expensive if the Redskins decide to use it for a third time. He would receive interest from multiple teams if he hits the free-agent market and should receive a lucrative offer this offseason. Cousins likely will be a starting quarterback next season and could be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback depending on his team.

  • Posted: 12/25/2017 1:21pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins became the first quarterback in Redskins' history with three seasons of at least 25 touchdown passes.

Huddle Up: Cousins will be one of the biggest names in free agency next offseason after receiving Washington's franchise tag for two straight years. It's difficult to gauge his fantasy value not knowing where he'll be playing, but it's unlikely that he'll lose much fantasy value and should remain in the QB1 conversation.

  • Posted: 12/24/2017 7:56pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 19 of his 37 passes for 299 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in a 27-11 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 16.

Huddle Up: Cousins delivered against a solid Denver defense, and he has now tossed multiple touchdowns in five of his last six games. Roll him out as a QB1 against the New York Giants in the season finale.

  • Posted: 12/17/2017 2:19pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 18 of his 26 pass attempts for 196 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 15 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Huddle Up: Cousins has thrown for 196 or fewer yards in each of the past two games, but he is working on a streak of six games with at least one TD pass. In Week 16 he'll face a Broncos pass defense which ranked No. 2 in yardage, but No. 32 in passing scores allowed.

  • Posted: 12/10/2017 8:23pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 15 of his 27 passes for 151 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 30-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14.

Huddle Up: Washington's passing attack was derailed by the pass rush of the Chargers, and Cousins finished with his lowest yardage total of the season. He should be back in the QB1 mix against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15.

  • Posted: 11/30/2017 9:33pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was 26-for-37 for 251 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the team's 24-point loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Nov. 30. Cousins was also sacked four times and fumbled twice, losing one.

Huddle Up: It's hard to fault Cousins for much Thursday night. He had no running game, protection issues and both of his picks came off deflections -- one at the line and one off the hands of Jamison Crowder. How much things will improve between now and Week 14, when they face a dangerous Los Angeles Chargers pass rush on the road, is debatable, making the early prospects for Cousins less than ideal.

  • Posted: 11/23/2017 8:46pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 19 of his 31 passes for 242 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and was sacked six times in a 20-10 win over the New York Giants Thursday, Nov. 23.

Huddle Up: Washington's offensive line was missing four starters at times, but Cousins survived to post a serviceable stat line. He will be in the QB1 mix in Week 13 against a struggling Dallas Cowboys team.

  • Posted: 11/19/2017 6:27pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 22 of his 32 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-31 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 11.

Huddle Up: Cousins had thrown one touchdown or less in his three previous games, so Sunday's performance offers hope for fantasy owners. He could be a low-end QB1 against the New York Giants in Week 12.

  • Posted: 11/5/2017 8:43pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 21 of his 31 pass attempts for 247 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 9 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Huddle Up: The performance by Cousins, and particularly Washington as a whole, was shocking. The team was missing two tight ends, several offensive linemen and Jamison Crowder, a top receiver, but they went on the road and won a tough road game.

  • Posted: 11/4/2017 6:29pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins needs to take more shots down the field, according to head coach Jay Gruden. 'That's probably the one area that we can force the issue on a little bit to give these receivers chances down the field,' Gruden said.

Huddle Up: Cousins will be playing in a tough environment at Seattle in Week 9, and he could have trouble creating big plays with multiple starters missing along the offensive line and in the receiving corps. If you have a quality backup with a solid matchup, you may want to bench Cousins.

  • Posted: 11/3/2017 4:09pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will be facing the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9, but he will not have two tight ends, two starting offensive linemen, a key reserve lineman and he might also be missing his top wide receiver.

Huddle Up: Cousins is a very risky fantasy play, as he could be on his back a lot. And when he is able to throw, he'll have the dependable Vernon Davis, but Jordan Reed and Niles Paul are already out. Jamison Crowder might also be sidelined. It's a MASH unit in Washington right now, and Cousins could struggle against an aggressive Seahawks defense as a result.

  • Posted: 10/23/2017 9:25pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 30 of 40 passes for 303 yards, while also tossing three touchdown passes and one interception in the team's Week 7 game Monday, Oct. 23, versus the Philadelphia Eagles. In addition, he picked up 18 rushing yards on three carries.

Huddle Up: Cousins has now registered 300-yard efforts in three of his last four games, amassing 10 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions over that span. He's typically a lower-end QB1 to roll with, but ever since his disappointing performance in the season opener, Cousins has actually been amongst the best quarterbacks in all of football. If he keeps up his recent play, he'll continue to be a viable option for all leagues.

  • Posted: 10/15/2017 6:42pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 25 of his 37 passes for 330 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran four times for 26 yards and a touchdown in a 26-24 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.

Huddle Up: Washington almost blew a big lead, but Cousins finished with a strong stat line and has now accounted for multiple touchdowns in three straight games. Up next is a rematch with a Philadelphia Eagles team that kept Cousins in check in Week 1, but he is playing well enough to deploy as a low-end QB1.

  • Posted: 10/2/2017 9:06pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 14 of 24 passes for 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the team's Week 4 loss Monday, Oct. 2, against the Kansas City Chiefs. He also added seven rushes for 38 yards.

Huddle Up: Despite registering his fewest pass attempts in a game since last December, Cousins ended up being efficient anyway in terms of fantasy scoring. It also helped that he didn't turn the ball over. Cousins continues to serve as a fine lower-end QB1 and as impressive as he's been over the last few seasons, 2017 is shaping up to be his best one yet, as he's on pace for a career-high QB rating.

  • Posted: 9/30/2017 11:13am ET

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins (non-injury) fully participated in practice Saturday, Sept. 30, and is not on the injury report for Week 4.

Huddle Up: Cousins is coming off his best game of the season in Week 3 where he threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns. He may be without some of his receivers and will be facing a tough Kansas City Chiefs defense but can still be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most leagues.

  • Posted: 9/30/2017 10:45am ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins (non-injury) returned to practice Saturday, Sept. 30, after leaving the team for a day to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.

Huddle Up: This means Cousins should be find to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. Playing against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium is usually difficult for any quarterback, so owners shouldn't hesitate benching Cousins this week if they have similar options with a better matchup.

  • Posted: 9/28/2017 7:48pm ET

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson is continuing to earn the trust of QB Kirk Cousins, according to head coach Jay Gruden. 'And that's something that's got to continue to develop because Josh can do things not many people can do when the ball is in the air,' Gruden said. 'I think with that will hopefully come more opportunity for him to make plays down the field on the ball where he looks like he might be covered but Kirk might give him a chance.'

Huddle Up: Doctson caught a long touchdown in Week 3, but that is his lone catch on the year. The upside is there, but he is a lottery ticket at this point.

  • Posted: 9/24/2017 9:08pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 25 of his 30 passes for 365 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-10 win over the Oakland Raiders in Week 3.

Huddle Up: After a sloppy start to the year, Cousins had a breakout performance against Oakland. His QB1 upside is undeniable, but Cousins could be a boom-or-bust option on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.

  • Posted: 9/17/2017 9:26pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 18 of his 27 pass attempts for 179 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 2 on the road against the Rams.

Huddle Up: Cousins is being paid like an elite quarterback, but so far he has passed for just 419 yards and two touchdowns with one interception through two games. Not good. He might recover in Week 3 in a potential shootout against Oakland on Sunday Night Football.

  • Posted: 9/10/2017 2:01pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was 23-for-40 for 240 yards with one touchdown and an interception in a 30-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 10.

Huddle Up: Philadelphia was 13th in the league in pass defense last year with 239.5 yards given up per game. The number of dropped balls and missed opportunities could be a concern, but this is also a big rivalry. The fact Cousins couldn't close the deal at home could be something to watch, but Cousins had a subpar preseason and this could be a hangover. Keep him as a QB1 for now.

  • Posted: 8/27/2017 5:08pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 10 of his 19 passes for 109 yards and an interception in a 23-17 preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday, Aug. 27.

Huddle Up: Cousins hasn't made many big plays this preseason, and Washington's revamped receiving corps could be contributing to the slow start. While the faces have changed a bit, he still has plenty of weapons at his disposal, so expect him to iron things out sooner rather than later and put together another season of QB1 production.

  • Posted: 8/19/2017 9:02pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 14 of his 23 pass attempts for 144 yards and a touchdown in a 21-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the preseason Saturday. Aug. 19.

Huddle Up: It wasn't the most efficient stat line for Cousins, but on the plus side, he was putting the ball in the air early and often. He has solid weapons around him and should be in line for another season of QB1 production.

  • Posted: 8/15/2017 11:41am ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins does not want to sign with another team when he becomes a free agent next offseason. Cousins loves playing for the Redskins and hopes to remain there for the entirety of his career.

Huddle Up: The desire is there, but Cousins and the Redskins have had difficult contract negotiations in the past. Nonetheless, Cousins is a No. 1 fantasy quarterback in 2017, even with the losses of Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson.

  • Posted: 7/20/2017 8:26pm ET

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson's progression this season could help determine if QB Kirk Cousins decides to sign a long-term extension, according to JP Finlay of CSNMidAtlantic.com.

Huddle Up: Doctson should be the fourth option in a pass-happy attack, and he can be considered an upside WR5 coming off an injury-plagued rookie year.

  • Posted: 7/18/2017 4:54pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins' first choice is to stay with the Redskins despite both sides not agreeing on a long-term deal. Cousins said he would love to stay in Washington long term and has hope for getting a deal done next offseason.

Huddle Up: The bottom line is that Cousins will still play for the Redskins in 2017. He's set to make a lot of money next year, though, whether that's from the Redskins or someone else. As for fantasy, Cousins has QB1 appeal after averaging 4,541.5 yards and 27 touchdowns the last two seasons, not to mention he's scored nine times on the ground in that span.

  • Posted: 7/17/2017 1:47pm ET

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was offered $53 million guaranteed as part of the Redskins' offer in early May, according to team president Bruce Allen.

Huddle Up: We don't know who Cousins will be playing for next season, but we do know that team will need to break the bank in order to sign him. He has quickly turned into one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the NFL over the last two years. View him as a low-end QB1 heading into 2017.

  • Posted: 7/17/2017 1:38pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was not given a new deal prior to the deadline Monday, July 17. He will play under the franchise tag for a second straight year.

Huddle Up: Cousins will be the beneficiary of a significant payday next offseason. As for this season, he remains a QB1 candidate despite losing both DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon.

  • Posted: 7/17/2017 6:04am ET

Updating an ongoing story, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins' best contract offer was received in May, which was higher than $20 million per year. The contract only added one guaranteed year, but it was worth less than the $23.9 million he's slated to make via the franchise tag.

Huddle Up: Cousins has averaged 4,542 yards, 27 touchdowns and 11.5 interceptions the last two seasons. He has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes in that span and sits just below the elite tier as a QB1 in fantasy.

  • Posted: 7/16/2017 12:40pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is not expected to sign a long-term deal before the 4 p.m. ET deadline Monday, July 17. However, Cousins is reportedly open to doing a deal with the team after this season as there has been 'a positive, constructive tone' to recent contract talks, per a source.

Huddle Up: It appears one of the NFL's longest ongoing sagas will continue for another few months. Cousins reportedly wants to bet on himself yet again in hopes he can maximize his earnings and potentially reset the market at quarterback as a free agent in 2018. In fantasy, he has settled in as a midrange QB1.

  • Posted: 7/13/2017 5:33am ET

Updating an ongoing story, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is likely to play for the franchise tag in 2017, and both sides are complacent with it, according to sources.

Huddle Up: Cousins has had two-and-a-half brilliant seasons in a row and nearly threw for 5,000 yards last season. He rates just below the elite tier in fantasy, but he's not a bad consolation prize.

  • Posted: 7/12/2017 2:31pm ET

The Washington Redskins still have not made much progress in contract talks with QB Kirk Cousins and the two sides are not close to a deal. The Redskins have until Monday, July 17, to sign Cousins to a long-term deal.

Huddle Up: Cousins has posted terrific numbers over the last two seasons and is looking for a lucrative contract but has not reached an agreement yet. Cousins will continue to be with the Redskins for at least one more season and can still be considered a No. 1 fantasy quarterback even though he lost his top two receivers in free agency.

  • Posted: 7/10/2017 9:05am ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins signing a long-term deal before the July 17 deadline remains a long shot.

Huddle Up: Our apologies for being Captain Obvious on a soap opera that has been stagnant for a couple of years. Cousins' play has also made him an obvious QB1 in fantasy after the top tier is gone.

  • Posted: 6/27/2017 7:52am ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins reaching a long-term deal is still a long shot, according to sources. There are promising signs of late, though.

Huddle Up: Cousins is knocking on the door of the elite tier in fantasy, but there are safer players to deliver on that. Treat Cousins as an option if you miss out on the top three or four at the position.

  • Posted: 6/20/2017 9:10am ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has 'become a leader and a fixture at a position of perpetual angst for (team owner Dan) Snyder,' according to CBS sports Jason La Confora, who believes there is now an 80 percent chance Cousins signs a long-term deal with the Redskins.

Huddle Up: La Confora also suggests letting Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson walk in free agency was a precursor to a long-term deal for Cousins. There has been a lot of positive momentum to reach a long-term deal this summer, and the sides have just under a month to negotiate a contract before Cousins is forced to play under the franchise tag. He figures to be a low-end QB1 in 2017.

  • Posted: 6/16/2017 2:09pm ET

Washington Redskins vice president of player personnel Doug Williams said the team wants to sign QB Kirk Cousins to a long-term extension in the worst way. Williams said the two sides have been negotiating this offseason.

Huddle Up: The Redskins will have about a month to sign Cousins to a long-term deal, so owners should keep an eye on the situation. He has thrown for at least 4,100 yards in each of the last two seasons and has posted 54 touchdowns during that time. Cousins did lose his top two receivers in free agency but still has a solid group of pass catchers to work with this season. Cousins can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in some leagues.

  • Posted: 6/7/2017 5:39am ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has had encouraging contract talks recently, which owner Daniel Snyder has gotten involved in, and he expressed an interest in re-signing Cousins. There is belief that even if a deal isn't completed by the July 15 franchise tag deadline, one could be completed after the season.

Huddle Up: Cousins had the fifth-most fantasy points the last five weeks of the season as well as the entire season. He has been consistently brilliant, and he's knocking on the door of the top couple of tiers at the position in fantasy.

  • Posted: 6/4/2017 7:50pm ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins' 104.7 passer rating since Week 7 of the 2015 season is the best mark in the NFL among players with at least 500 pass attempts.

Huddle Up: While the Redskins have been hesitant to commit to Cousins long term, fantasy owners shouldn't be afraid to grab him as a midrange QB1.

  • Posted: 5/23/2017 7:32am ET

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins could receive a third consecutive franchise tag next offseason, according to team president Bruce Allen. The cost of a third straight franchise tag would be $34 million in 2018.

Huddle Up: Cousins has had two brilliant seasons in a row, but after a marked turnover in weaponry, there's very real risk with him as a QB1. He's, ideally, a low-end QB1 or fringe backup choice.
